Barbacane, Thornton & Company’s commitment to advancing financial excellence for the government and nonprofit sectors and for the development of young professionals is Robert Barbacane’ s legacy as one of the firm’s co-founders.
Rob retired as a practicing CPA in 2018, concluding a professional career that included positions at a regional public accounting firm and later at a National firm. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware when he co-founded, in 1978 the firm that bears his name.
During his career Rob was a member of the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants and the Delaware Society of Certified Public Accountants. He served on the Political Action, Legislative and Managing Accounting Practice committees of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). He was active with the Delaware County, Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Association of Accountants as a past president.
As an active member of the community, Rob served on the board of directors of Crozer Keystone Health System, where he was a member of the finance committee and served as chairman of the audit committee. He also remained active with the Taylor Community Foundation and Neumann University. In addition, he has served on the Accountants Committee of United Way of Delaware. He is past board president of Goodwill Industries of Delaware and Taylor Hospital. Rob was the 2016 PICPA Greater Philadelphia Champion CPA Award recipient in recognition of his significant contributions to the profession and his community and for consistent participation in mentoring activities and development of new programs.
For over 25 years, Rob served as an instructor for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants for courses involving accounting and auditing topics. He received the Outstanding Instructor Award on several occasions. Rob was instrumental in launching numerous CPA careers throughout his tenure with the firm and through his teaching.
